A big hug and applause to everyone, we did it. Another trip around the sun. Massive props to the OG readers and a warm welcome to the new faces in the Deepfield fam for 2023.
This year, I spread Deepfield beyond the screen. I created a podcast version of the articles which was fun to learn and it helped Deepfield hit a more global audience. Unfortunately writing and podcasting solo can be a lot so I didn’t release as much as I would’ve liked to this year.
But if you're thinking about hitting the mic, do it. And if someone offers you help with the audio production stuff —take it.
Deepfield also became a physical zine this year and launched at the annual Festival of the Photocopier. I sold around 15 copies along with a personal travel photography zine called Base. I met a lot of great writers, zinesters, artists and anarchists, and felt truly at home in the zine community 💕.
Both zines are available for purchase at Sticky Institute on the 8th floor of the Nicholson Building in Melbourne.
Deepfield will be back next year in another evolution to the format. I’ll be going back to full-time study and continuing full-time work, so Deepfield will be shifting gears.
More on that when it drops but the first artefact is titled Beyond Backyards - Suburban Aspirations and Realities in the Aussie Permacrisis.
Until then, thank you all for letting me go off on one, indulging in these tangents, and appreciating my dark sense of humour for what it is.
Happy trails to you, until we meet again x
The Deep(est)fields of 2023
From middle-class oppulance, to corexcore, to dopamine e-commerce to the ageing brain, to chaos addiction, to IRL snuff - these are the Deepfields of 2023.
The thread that I’m pulling :
Coping is the next social divide. Choose chaos as rebellion or mundanity as affluence.
I once had a housemate that bought a Native American Indian breastplate to wear at a music festival instead of paying rent. And, I once worked with a girl that knew every vitamin in her 5AM-9AM routine and thought that Russia and Ukraine were the same country.
How we choose to cope will define our tribes.
